Bethesda, Maryland (WUSA) --- Kim Lutz is a busy working mom with a head full of curls that tend to get frizzy making the summer months super challenging. Kim says, " The humidity around Washington doesn't help much."

Her stylist, Faik Halici of Studio 47 in Bethesda, Maryland says summer isn't the time to try and straighten natural ringlets. Instead, he says, use products made for curls that coat the hair shaft and keep frizz at bay.

Faik also suggests that people with curly hair use a blow dryer with a diffuser. A diffuser will add body, without frizz. Faik Halici says, " Use a decent size amount of products and just apply it everywhere and dry it with a diffuser and just let it go!"

The summer months are particularly tough on color treated hair. Darnestown, Maryland resident Page Rafferty has highlights and lowlights throughout her shoulder length hair. She worries constantly about the sun damaging her hair. Page says, " For me the challenge is keeping it in some easy style and something that I can protect, but it does get light, it bleaches out."

Faik says a deep conditioning treatment either in the salon or by using a hair mask at home can make a major difference. He says, " Just wash the hair and shampoo it, just leave it on for five minutes or ten minutes."

There are also several lines of hair products on the market with UV filers that help keep hair from getting too light. Faik says blondes like Paige need to wear a hat as much as possible. He suggests dampening the hair first and coat it with a conditioner or spray to keep highlights from soaking up chlorine. Faik says, blonde hair has the potential to turn a greenish color from the chlorine and salt water.

Finally, even though Paige loves the way her hair looks when it's blow dried straight, Faik says that heat is just too much on a daily basis. He recommends most hair during the summer months only blow dry once or twice a week, but not every day.

So whether it's curly or straight, color-treated or not, adding extra moisture and limiting exposure to the sun can keep your hair healthy and strong during those hot and hazy days of summer.
